M-156 rocket accidentally launched 60 miles NE of Tucson

TUCSON – An investigation is underway after a single M-156 rocket was launched unintentionally during a routine training mission Thursday morning.

According to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, an A-10C Thunderbolt II assigned to the 354th Fighter Squadron from the 355th Wing reportedly launched a rocket that hit a desert wash in an uninhabited area under the Jackal Military Operation Area.

This area is located 60 miles northeast of the Old Pueblo.

DM officials say the training area is not designated for munitions release.

Authorities say no injuries, damages or fires were reported in connection with the incident at this time.
