TUCSON (KVOA) - Top seed Ironwood Ridge blew a two-set advantage Tuesday night in falling to Arcadia 3-2 (22-25, 21-25, 25-13, 25-20, 16-14) in the Conference 5A quarterfinals.
It was another disappointing end for the Nighthawks as a state championship continues to elude them.
This was the fourth time this century Ironwood Ridge has been a No. 1 seed and failed to win it all.
The Nighthawks were the top seed in 2007 and 2010 and lost in the semifinals.
Bill Lang’s 2015 team took their top seed all the way to the state championship match before falling to No. 2 Sunnyslope 3-1.
The 2012, 2013 and 2016 Nighthawks all bowed out in the semifinals.
The loss to the Titans (13-5) was Ironwood Ridge’s first of the season (14-1).
The champion in Conference 5-A will be a four-seed or lower as No. 2 Horizon also lost their quarterfinal match on Tuesday.
In Conference 4-A, No. 2 seed Salpointe Catholic cruised to a three-set sweep (25-10, 25-15, 25-22) of American Leadership Academy-Queen Creek.
The Lancers (16-2) advanced to the state semifinals on Thursday where they will host Flagstaff (14-3).
Salpointe Catholic is in the Final Four for the fourth time in the last five years as they look to win a third gold volleyball since 2016.
Senior outside hitter and North Texas signee Andrea Owens led the Lancers with 18 kills.
Bianca Devitis (12), Jaylynn Ransom (10) and Brandy Kishbaugh (10) all had double digits in digs. Kishbaugh finished with 29 assists.
The Conference 4-A state championship match is Saturday at Mesquite High School in Gilbert with first serve at 11 a.m.
