TUCSON - Pima Basketball avenged their losing trip to the Valley last month as both the Aztec women men got back at Mesa Wednesday night for losses on the road.
Pima earned its fifth straight win on Wednesday after beating Mesa 97-87. The Aztecs have pulled into a tie with Glendale for the No. 2 seed with four games remaining in the regular season.
Sophomore Rashad Smith (Hamilton HS), sophomore Jordan Robinson (Tucson HS) and sophomore Cole Gerken all hit three-pointers in the final four minutes to help the Aztecs (16-10, 10-8 in ACCAC) cement the victory.
Robinson nailed five treys in the game to finish with 23 points. He also dished out eight assists. Freshman Jake Lieppert (Saguaro HS) also scored 23 points as he went 6-for-12 from beyond the arc. Smith dropped 20 points.
The Aztecs will return to the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium on Saturday to face South Mountain Community College. Tipoff for the women's game is at 2:00 p.m. with the men's contest to follow at 4 p.m.
Pima defeated No. 20 Mesa 58-46 Wednesday at the West Gym gaining some ground in the ACCAC Division II standings.
The Aztecs (19-7, 12-6) now trail the Thunderbirds (16-9, 13-5) by just one game for the top seed in Division II heading into Wednesday’s contest. The Aztecs have four regular season games remaining.
Sophomore Alyssa Perez (Marana HS) finished with a game-high 17 points. Sophomore Hallie Lawson (Campo Verde HS) had a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds to go along with three blocks.
