GIRLS: Rangers and Lancers draw in the rain

TUCSON - In a battle of sevens everything came up zeroes.

Conference 5A No. 7 Rincon-University and Conference 4A No. 7 Salpointe Catholic played to a 0-0 double overtime draw on a rainy Monday night at Doherty Stadium to wrap up the 2019-20 girls soccer regular season.

If both the Rangers and Lancers hold their seventh positions when the final rankings are released on Tuesday they will receive automatic bids to their respective state tournaments and avoid the play-in round.

Rincon-University is the second rated Southern Arizona team in Conference 5A behind 2nd ranked Cienega. Ironwood Ridge (8), Mountain View (9), Desert View (14), Marana (20), Nogales (21) and Flowing Wells (23) are all currently in the 5A play-in picture.

The Rangers will be looking for a 3rd state final appearance and second championship (2008).

Salpointe Catholic is the three-time reigning Conference 4A state champions.

The Lancers are 7-5 all-time in state finals with titles in 1990, 1992, 1998, 1999, 2017, 2018 and 2019.

Current Salpointe Catholic head coach Kelly Pierce played on two of the Lancers' state championship sides (1998 and 1999) and has coached the last three state titlists.

SCHS is currently Southern Arizona's third highest rated 4A side behind Catalina Foothills (4) and Sahuaro (5).

Walden Grove (8), Douglas (10) and Canyon del Oro (19) are the other area teams likely to advance to the state playoffs.
