TUCSON - The third time was the charm for the fifth-ranked Baboquivari Warriors in their seasonal-showdown with No. 1 St. David.
The Warriors built a ten-point second half lead and held on to beat the Tigers 51-44 in the Girls Conference 1A South regional tournament championship game Saturday night at the Arizona State School for the Deaf and Blind.
St. David (26-3) had beaten Baboquivari by 17 and two during the regular season on their way to a perfect 12-0 region record but it's the second consecutive year the Tigers have fallen to the Warriors in the 1A tournament championship game.
Baboquivari (23-6) got 17 points from all-time leading scorer Autumn Nelson. Freshman Jordan Roman added 16 while Desarae Ortega poured in 13 points.
Sidney Clump had nine points for St. David.
Baboquivari is hoping the victory over the top small school girls team in the state will propel them to a return run to the 1A state championship game where the Warriors lost last season to Mogollon.
Both St. David and Baboquivari will receive automatic bids to the 1A state tournament.
The Warriors had beaten Valley Union (HIGHLIGHTS) on Friday to advance to Saturday title tilt while St. David had dispatched The Gregory School.
On the boys side, Baboquivari made it a clean sweep for Sells in Tucson as the Warriors knocked off Patagonia Union 75-60.
