Turnovers stifle Lancers’ title bid

CHANDLER – Bijan Robinson became just the third player to ever rush for 7,000 yards in Arizona high school football.

But in the end it wasn’t quite enough as turnovers foiled 4th seed Salpointe Catholic in a 24-16 loss the top-seed Chandler in the Open Division semifinal.

The Lancers (10-1) gave the ball away to the Wolves five times in the contest allowing them to advance to the state championship game. Chandler (12-0) will face Scottsdale Saguaro (11-1). The 2nd seed Sabercats beat #7 Chandler Hamilton 20-16, setting up the matchup that most wanted to see when this Open Division format was created prior to this season.

Chandler (6A) and Saguaro (4A) will duke it out on Saturday, December 6 at Sun Devil Stadium.

Trailing 3-0, sophomore quarterback Treyson Bourguet hit senior wide receiver Lathan Ransom on a 68-yard deep ball to give the Lancers their first lead of the night. Ransom had entered the game with touchdowns on his last five receptions.
