Ransom utilizing new QB to help stretch Salpointe’s offense

TUCSON – And the Friday Football Fever Week 13 Tucson Roadrunners Player of the Week award goes to Salpointe Catholic wide receiver Lathan Ransom.

The senior may eventually be one of the hardest hitting safeties in college football when he hits the field for the Ohio State Buckeyes but as the Lancers try make a statement in the new Open Division state playoffs, Ransom is making a significant mark on offense.

He caught two passes for 90 yards in the Lancers 48-10 quarterfinal win over Pinnacle last Friday night. Both catches went for touchdowns. In fact the last five balls that Ransom has caught have gone for scores.

And it doesn’t end there. The state’s #4 ranked recruit (247Sports) has eight touchdowns on his last nine receptions. Ransom’s 10 pass catching scores this season have come on just 16 receptions (429 yards).

In other words he’s very Chris Carter. All he does is catch touchdowns.

Ransom committed to the Buckeyes in late July, ending a recruiting process that saw him get 28 offers from Division I school across the country. He took official visits to LSU, Notre Dame, Oklahoma and Texas before deciding to head to Columbus to further his football dreams.

26 is the number of career touchdowns Ransom has scored in his three seasons on the Dennis Bene’s varsity squad.

This year, the safety known for his bone-crushing hits, has 47 tackles and three sacks. He had 11 interceptions in his first two seasons but does not have pick this year.

Ransom’s receiving numbers have been bolstered by the arrival of sophomore quarterback Treyson Bourguet to the Lancers starting lineup. Since Bene gave the reigns of his program to Bourguet, he’s thrown 11 touchdown passes to just one interception while completing 75% of his throws.

4th seed (4A) Salpointe Catholic (10-0) will play top seed (6A) Chandler (11-0) Saturday night in a 6 p.m. game at Hamilton High School. The other Open Division semifinal pits #7 seed (6A) Hamilton against 2nd seed (4A) Saguaro (10-1). The winners will meet in the state championship game at Sun Devil Stadium on Saturday, December 6.

The Lancers are led by running back Bijan Robinson. The senior needs just 83 yards to become the 3rd player in Arizona high school history to run for 7,000 yards in a career.
