Gasaway is a “ridiculously special” piece in Sahuaro’s three-headed run game

TUCSON – And the Friday Football Fever Week 12 Tucson Roadrunners Player of the Week award goes to Sahuaro Cougars wide receiver Jamir Gasaway.

He might be listed as a wide receiver but the reality is Gasaway has just five catches on the season. The junior is a versatile speedster who plays a much bigger role in the run-game for head coach Scott McKee.

Gasaway ran for 166 yards and three touchdowns on just six carries last Friday night in the Cougars impressive 46-25 Conference 4A opening-round playoff win over Glendale. His touchdown runs went for 63, 55 and 27 yards.

McKee at times this season has utilized Jamir in the Wildcat formation as he did in the win over the Cardinals. Gasaway is averaging 18 yards per carry this season and has 776 yards rushing and eight touchdowns.

Jamir is a part of a trio of talented runners for the Cougars dubbed the “three-headed dragon”.

Gasaway, junior Trevion Watkins and senior Izaiah Davis have combined to rack up 2,335 yards on the ground this season with 27 touchdowns.

Sahauro (9-2) is the top seed in Conference 4A and will host 9th seed Yuma Gila Ridge (10-1). The Cougars and Kino Region counterpart Casa Grande are the lone two teams from Southern Arizona remaining in the 4A playoffs. If Sahuaro can reach the finals that 4A state championship game will be played Arizona Stadium.

Sahuaro advanced to the 4A state semifinals in 2018 where they lost to Salpointe Catholic. The Lancers will play this season in the new Opening Division playoff.

The Cougars are in the post-season for the eighth time in McKee’s 11-year tenure. After losing in the first round in McKee’s first six playoff trips, Sahuaro is 3-1 in the post-season the last two years.
