Sabino’s Skaggs quickly ascending to be one of Southern Arizona’s best passers

TUCSON – And the Friday Football Fever Week 8 Tucson Roadrunners Player of the Week award goes to Sabino quarterback AJ Skaggs.

The junior threw for a career-high five touchdowns in a 48-2 Sabercats win over Tanque Verde.

Skaggs was almost flawless completing 14-of-17 passes for 304 yards and he did so to nine different receivers. Dawson Szarek caught four passes for 93 yards and two touchdowns.

He enters this weekend just 28 yards shy of 3,000 for his career. He has 36 touchdown passes in his two seasons as the Sabercats quarterback, 16 of which have come this season.

AJ Skaggs career stats

Skaggs’ 1,348 passing yards this season are second-best in Southern Arizona behind Walden Grove’s Alex Lopez (1,618).

The Sabercats have won 15 of their last 18 games. Their only losses this season are to rival Sahuaro, a Conference 4A team and a 20-14 overtime road loss to Conference 3A #1 Queen Creek Ben Franklin.

Sabino is currently ranked #9 in Conference 3A which means they have some ground to make up if they want to host a 1st round state playoff contest at the Saberdome. If they ended up 8th or 9th the Sabercats would like get a rematch against the Chargers in the state quarterfinals.
