Hit the Trails!

Looking to change up your fitness routine this year? Get off the roads and get on the trails!

“Trail running and hiking can be an excellent compliment or substitute to your time on the road” says Anne Stancil, owner of Fleet Feet Tucson. “We’re very fortunate here in Tucson that there are numerous trails very close to us. Some just minutes away!

Stancil explains that there are several benefits to trail running and hiking, primarily that the trail surface is easier on the body. In addition, the uneven surface engages muscles and joints in a different way. Many running-related injuries result from the repetition of running on a flat surface. “Each time we hit the ground when running the impact is 3 times our body weight,” explains Stancil. The trail surface lessens this impact. Moreover, regular trail running and hiking strengthens the muscles and connective tissues used for balance, which can actually prevent injuries.

Before you head out on the trails, here are some tips for successful trail running or hiking:

  1. Get Trail-specific Shoes
For added protection, Stancil suggests purchasing shoes designed for off-road use. “They have better traction and protection from rocks and other debris.” says Stancil. In addition, trail-specific shoes are more durable.

  2. Take Plenty of Water
Becoming dehydrated while you’re hiking or running can leave you tired and increase your risk of falling. In extreme situations in can be downright dangerous. “The more strenuous the hike or run, the more water you’ll need to drink,” says Stancil. “Accessories such as hydration backpacks allow you to carry up to two liters of water.”

  3. Safety in Numbers
Hiking and running on trails is fun, but there are hazards too, such as falls or getting lost on unfamiliar trails. “The most important part of trail hiking and running is staying safe, so consider bringing a group of friends with you,” says Stancil. “They can encourage and motivate you and you’ll have someone with you in case something goes wrong.” If are are seeking some solitude, be sure to notifiy family and friends where you plan to go.
