No arrests in year old double homicide

TUCSON – It has been a year since two men were murdered on the city’s south side.

Javier Chacon Gomez and Carlos Mendoza were shot and killed near San Joaquin and Bopp Road on Feb. 22, 2018.

For her safety, a family member asked not to be identified.  News 4 Tucson caught up with her at the cemetery where she laid flowers on Chacon Gomez’s grave.

She said the men did not deserve to be murdered.  She said they were good men who loved their family.

She said there are some family members who may know who killed Mendoza and Chacon Gomez but are not talking to the Pima County Sheriff’s detectives.

She wants them to have a heart, and tell authorities what they know.

The Sheriff’s department said this might have been drug-related.  During the investigation, the detective who was handling the case then said the property at one time was being used to store, prepackage and distribute marijuana.

He also learned both victims had served time in prison on drug charges.  Detective Hector Palomino told news 4 Tucson last April,  “they were still victims of a homicide, no one deserves to be murdered, the family is still asking for answers, and we’re going to do everything we can to solve this case.”

He no longer is handling the case because he now works for another unit.

The family member said the men were killed because of jealousy and greed.

She said she prays for justice and wants anyone with information to contact authorities.

The family is also offering a reward.  If anyone has information call 9-1-1 or 88-CRIME.
