DOUGLAS, Ariz. (KVOA) – Two United States citizens were arrested Wednesday after attempting to smuggle 23 undocumented immigrants near Douglas.
According U.S. Customs and Border Protection, agents conducted an immigration-related traffic stop on a semi-trailer near mile marker 371 on State Route 80 around 10 p.m.
Agents arrested 22 Mexican nationals and one Guatemalan national, ranging in age from 16 to 69.
CBP says one of the Mexican nationals in the groups had a "history of extensive immigration violations".
The other migrants were reportedly expelled from the country via Title 42 authority.
According to CBP, "expulsions under Title 42 are not based on immigration status and are tracked separately from immigration enforcement actions, such as apprehension or inadmissibility, that are regularly reported by CBP."
The driver and passenger were identified as juveniles.
