N4T Investigators: Daycare bites

TUCSON – Records obtained by News 4 Tucson show that a Tucson daycare at the center of a nationwide story received a growing number of citations over the last several years.

In April, Alice Martin shared a picture of her then 15-month-old daughter online. In the post, Martin claimed her daughter was bitten more than 25 times by another child while at Creative Beginnings Pre-School.

Alice Martin says her daughter was bitten 25 times at Creative Beginnings Pre-School.

“I was taking off her onesie after dinner to give her a bath, they were just there. It was horrible,” said Martin.

News 4 Tucson Investigators went through Arizona Department of Health Services inspection reports.

They show Creative Beginnings had two citations in 2016, four in 2017 and 22 in 2018.

All of the issues were corrected and not severe enough to trigger an enforcement action.

However, many of the citations in 2018, center around an inadequate or improperly certified staff.

“Upon entering the facility at approximately 2:21 p.m. the Surveyors observed Staff 4 working alone with 13 children, ages 2-5, in the front classroom, which is licensed as a 3/4’s classroom. Based on documentation in Staff 4’s file during the inspection, Staff 4 was not qualified to act in the capacity of a teacher-caregiver without supervision,” said one of the citations.

News 4 Tucson attempted to speak with Creative Beginnings about the citations several times.

An unidentified employee at the facility told News 4 Tucson the daycare had hired a lawyer. However, they declined to give the lawyer’s name or take News 4 Tucson’s phone number in order to call our investigators back.

Both Tucson police and the Arizona Department of Health Services are looking into Martin’s complaint.

Martin’s post has been shared 1,000s of times. She says she posted it in order to inform other parents.

“It shouldn’t happen ever. Is kind of my feeling so if anything can be done to keep this from happening to someone else,” said Martin.
