TUCSON (KVOA) - The complaints keep coming. Small cell wireless poles are popping up all over the city. AT&T and Verizon said they will provide faster internet service and better cell reception. But more and more residents are not having it.
The construction going on here has not been confirmed that it is a cell tower.
News 4 Tucson spoke to the workers on site and they said they are simply digging a hole, but nearby residents believe it is prep work for a small cell wireless pole. They are anything but small. Basically, a 35-foot tall pole in your front yard with zero notice.
AT&T and Verizon have the power over where these poles will be installed. The city does not have a say and neither do you, the homeowner.
Residents are not happy about it, especially since this construction on Pima and Alvernon is on a landscaped water retention basin, which took grant money and 10 years.
"It has probably been four years since we have had it. We have hand watered the plants. So it is an important piece of our neighborhood. It is our public face… Oh it was just heartbreaking and we are furious," said Resident Meg Johnson.
"The residents who live there, they have invested years in sweat equity in this project. What they don't need to do is wake up and find a backhoe trencher sitting there digging it up," said Steve Kozachik, Council Member, Ward 6.
News 4 Tucson was told that the city was trying to serve a cease-and-desist order to these workers. It is unclear if that happened.
Councilman Steve Kozachik said something has to be done. He is holding a meeting about it next week.
