TUCSON (KVOA) - The Second Lady, Karen Pence, loves the United States military, but has a special place in her heart for military spouses.
It is not just something service members sign up for, it is the whole family.
Mrs. Pence was born on an Air Force base. Her son, Michael Pence and her two son-in-laws are all in the military. She knows from watching her daughters and speaking with military spouses what life with a service member.
In 2018, Mrs. Pence launched a campaign to elevate and encourage military spouses while also recognizing their unique employment challenges. As a military spouse, the focus is on their husband or wife. They stand by their side and move all across the country to fulfill a duty as that military spouse.
Mrs. Pence has traveled the country meeting spouses, business leaders and government officials advocating for more fulfilling career opportunities for military spouses.
"We do not want you to just have a job. We want you to have a career. Our military spouses are very highly trained," Mrs. Pence said. "Very highly educated. Very capable. Amazing life skills. You are the kind of people we want to employ."
Wives received a bracelet and husbands got a coin, as a gift from the Second Lady.
Karen Pence then went to Luke Air Force Base to speak with more military spouses. Her husband Mike Pence will be in Phoenix, Friday.
