Diocese of Tucson identifies local pastor as victim of fatal crash on I-19

TUCSON - The Roman Catholic Diocese of Tucson announced that a Tucson priest has died after he was involved in a two-vehicle collision on Interstate 19 at Kilometer 78 Friday morning.

According to Arizona Department of Public Safety, first-responders were dispatched to Interstate 19 in reference to a fatal crash at around 8:14 a.m. Friday.

Shortly after the news broke, Bishop Edward J. Weisenburger went to Facebook to inform the community that Fr. Raul Valencia of Saint Mónica Roman Parish was killed in that crash.

In the post, the Tucson bishop said Valencia was driving near Nogales this morning to visit family.

" I kindly ask your prayers for our dear Fr. Valencia, his family, and his parish," Weisenburger said. "Of course, the death of a priest also affects the body of the presbyterate profoundly. Let us keep one another in prayer as well."

DPS has not yet identified Valencia as the person killed in the crash.
