Small cell poles going up to improve wireless coverage in Tucson

TUCSON – New technology is being installed on light poles to improve cellular service around the city.

The devices are primarily visible Downtown, but the city is working with cell phone companies to install them in other locations.

They do not have the range of traditional towers, but they are expected to improve service, especially indoors, according to a Verizon spokesperson.

They are part of the transition to 5th generation cellular wireless, or 5G.
