Union Pacific: 12 train cars derailed in central Tucson Tuesday

TUCSON – A train derailment that occurred early Tuesday in central Tucson has prompted an investigation, Union Pacific officials say.

According to officials, about 12 cars derailed at around 2 a.m. Tuesday at the Union Pacific’s rail yard, located near Aviation Highway and Alvernon Way.

Authorities said four tank cars derailed upright with no releases of any hazardous material.

In addition, two hopper cars derailed in connection with the incident. Officials say those cars spilled some plastic pellets.

No one was injured in the incident.
