TUCSON – Maria Escobedo was known as kind, nice and loving. She was a family woman, a mother and a grandma.
The brother of Escobedo, Jose Tellez was emotional as he talked to News 4 Tucson about the life sentence of Mario Jesus Dorame.
“It tears you up. It hurts. It hurts really bad,” Tellez said. “As a family you don’t you just don’t imagine that these things would happen to you.”
Dorame was sentenced Friday for the murder of Escobedo.
Tellez said their family is tight-knit.
“As a family, you want to take care of each other and you just don’t know how because you didn’t know what was going on specifically.”
Friday morning, Escobedo’s children spoke inside the courtroom. They said their mom kept a journal. Her son read the last words his mother wrote.
“Today, I made it to domestic violence class. I’m hoping it helps me see Mario the way my children see him. God help me be the strong woman I’m supposed to be.”
The family said they are still trying to process everything and hope Escobedo’s story will bring awareness to domestic violence.
