Community mourns Sierra Vista teen killed after falling from SUV

SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. – Family, friends, parents and fellow students all gathered together on Monday night to mourn the loss of a 15-year-old killed in a tragic accident.

More than 100 people came together at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Sierra Vista to remember Mario Lopez.

“He had so much promise,” said Cochise County Sheriff Mark Dannels.

Dannels was Lopez’s wrestling coach in high school. He says the 15-year-old was an excellent wrestler who made it all the way to the State Championship his first year. However, Dannels says what he really remembers Lopez for is his fun-loving energy.

“That wrestler that wanted to make sure that I knew he was there. Hey, coach, I’m here. He always had some comment to make, always in a fun manner. He was a good kid,” said Dannels.

Lopez was killed early Monday morning. Officials say he was standing on top of moving vehicle when he fell off and hit his head. Paramedics rushed Lopez to the hospital but were not able to save him.
