Midtown fire destroys local business and damages others shops nearby

TUCSON – The fire was so massive, witnesses could see the smoke throughout the city of Tucson. It took fire crews about an hour to get the flames under control.

Heavy smoke and flames showing from the roof as crews arrived on the scene. It engulfed a building located in The Lost Barrio Historic Warehouse District near Park Avenue and Broadway Boulevard.

When business owners in the district heard the news, they were devastated.

“And of course I was very scared that something would happen to any of the other stores. We have been here for many years,”  the owner of LCM Interiors and La Casa Mexicana said.

Mendivil said her business has been in the district for 30 years.

“Thank God my business didn’t sustain any damages except for a little bit of smoke damage, so we are hoping to be able to be open to the public as soon as possible.”

The Tucson Fire Department said if it was not for being up to fire code and having a firewall, the fire could have destroyed all the other businesses.

Mendivil said it is an investment but also important to make sure your business is up to fire code. She is living proof of it.

“Ever since the last fire in 2008, we had to go through a hard expense to put all the wiring under conduit. To do electrical outlets the way they are supposed to be and to get everything right so this doesn’t happen again.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation. If you know of anything, call 88-CRIME.
