Father of the Year Honoree shares how fatherhood changed life approach

TUCSON- One of the seven honorees for Father of the Year is Brent DeRaad.

DeRaad is the President and CEO of Visit Tucson. He has been married to his wife for nearly 30 years and they have two sons.

“The key to being a father is just to spend the time and really being engaged in your son’s or children’s lives,” he said. “It is imperative that you pay attention to them and take interest and you do everything you can to help them develop as people.”

DeRaad admitted being a father softened him up to the overall approach to life. He said that while work is important, there are bigger things in his world that matter more.

“The fact you have people relying on you on a daily basis for the food, shelter and clothing, and certainly for their emotional needs as well,” DeRaad said.

He said that the most difficult thing to being a parent is giving his children latitude to make mistakes.

“The best advice I could ever give any prospective parent is to make sure you make time for your kids,” he said. “Really be engaged in their lives and educate them to survive out in the world.”
