New hotels coming to downtown Tucson

TUCSON – The Rio Nuevo Board unanimously voted to restructure its incentives for the Hilton Hotel at Cathedral Square project that will bring nearly 200 more hotel rooms to downtown.

Right now, the location is a vacant lot but come next year, it will be home to new hotels and tourists from around the world.

The project, at South Stone Avenue and East Ochoa Street, will include a 75-room Hampton Inn and a 123-room Extended-Stay.

There are not enough hotels downtown to meet the need of tourists. In fact, Tucson is the largest city in the United States that does not have a Convention Center Hotel.

The Rio Nuevo Board feels this is a big win for downtown Tucson.

“The exciting part is this organization is outside the state of Arizona and it’s not like Rio Nuevo are going and looking for projects to come to downtown. They are literally coming to us. So this organization builds hotels all across the U.S. They are national and they see Tucson as a really up and coming community,” said Rio Nuevo Board Member Edmund Marquez.

The project is expected to be complete in the year 2020.
