Marana mother charged for stabbing baby rejects plea deal

TUCSON – A Marana woman who was charged for attempting to murder her infant son appeared in court Tuesday.

Back in 2017, Marana Police Department responded to a residence on Wind Runner Parkway, near Tangerine and Thornydale roads after they received a report that a baby had been stabbed. When they arrived at the scene, the 7-month-old infant was found stabbed in the throat.

His mother, Kay Kunes, was charged with attempted murder and child abuse in relation to the incident.

On Monday, a plea deal was presented that would require Kunes to spend 17 years in a mental health facility and have no contact with her child until he turns 18 years old.

Kunes representatives rejected the deal, according to court officials.

She is expected to be back in court on April 10.
