TUCSON – Emergency lights and sirens, that’s what’s driving one viewer crazy. News 4 Tucson Yvette said, “Police turn on their lights and sirens and then quickly turn them off.” Why?
It is a common situation and we have all experienced it. News 4 Tucson’s Allie Potter talked to Tucson Police Department to explain why.
“Whether it’s an emergency or not, they don’t know, we don’t know,” said officer Ray Smith. “So we just want to get there as soon as possible.”
The lights go on to tell drivers to get out of the way.
“That definitely helps us out if people move over to the right,” said Smith. “It’s not like we are trying to be jerks or anything and barge our way through traffic but sometimes we need to get there and sometimes it gets canceled.”
Smith said if you are in a turn lane, stay put.
“It kind of gets confusing when people are in their turn lanes,” Smith said. “Then they want to go right and they can’t so we just try to tell people if they can pull safely to the right, do so we are trying to get through.”
Police said they do not drive with their lights and sirens on if they do not have to.
“We call it Code 3 driving, then we want to shut down as soon as possible,” said Smith.
