TUCSON – The search for the missing hiker in Madera Canyon has been suspended, according to Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials say the hiker, later identified as 83-year-old Joe Smallwood, contacted 911 at 4 p.m. Feb. 5 and reported he was lost. Shortly after, Santa Cruz County rescue crews responded to the area. They discovered that his vehicle was still in the visitor’s parking lot.
Last Thursday, the sheriff’s office announced that the search will be transitioned into a recovery effort due to the frigid weather conditions.
Officials said after seven days of searching for the Ohio/Arizona resident, rescue crews have not yet located the 83-year-old. They announced Monday afternoon the overall search will be suspended.
