Tucson districts looking for teachers to fill open positions

TUCSON – Nationwide there is a severe teacher shortage. That is especially true here in Arizona.

News 4 Tucson went to two large districts in our area to see how dire the shortage is for them. Together they serve about 59,000 students.

“We have 91 teacher vacancies that we’re chasing for the 2019 school year that we want to fill,” said Dr. Gabriel Trujillo, Tucson Unified School District (TUSD) Superintendent. “We have 47 classified positions that we’re hiring for that we flagged as really crucial.”

TUSD says their biggest area of need is Special Education teachers and assistants.

“Tucson Values Teachers did a study a few years ago about the rate that Tucson districts pay and we pay the lowest in the state and the nation,” said Janet Rico Uhrig, Executive Director of Human Resources for TUSD.

She says the pay is the primary reason for the shortage, but their numbers are not bad this year compared to past years.

“We have seen actually in Tucson Unified a decrease in the number of teacher vacancies,” said Rico Uhrig. “One is because we’re doing the best we can to make our district great.”

Over in the Vail School District, they do not know exactly how many spots are open now, but they say with all the growth in the district, it can be challenging to fill positions. However, they have always been able to fill the spots.

“We’re really fortunate to be able to find candidates to fill those vacancies as of right now we’re not planning on filling those vacancies with subs,” said Jena Privette, Assistant Director of Human Resources for the district. “We’re hoping to fill all those vacancies with candidates.”

Privette says they are beginning to issue contracts so they will have an idea of open positions soon.

“Overall we’re just looking for the best candidate, the best fit for that school and for those students and someone who is going to do a really great job,” said Privette.

Anyone interested in a job as a teacher or staff member can attend a job fair on Saturday. The Vail School District, Marana School District and TUSD will all be having job fairs on Feb. 2.
