A search warrant was issued and deputies said they found several malnourished and confined dogs at the shelter. They also said there were feces in the animal’s crates.

MCSO said one dog died after being transported for emergency veterinary care.

The other 52 dogs were taken to the MCSO Animal Safe Haven.

“It’s heartbreaking to see animals in this condition,” said Sheriff Paul Penzone. “Our investigators will seek charges as appropriate in this case.”

The shelter owner, Domenic Anthony Asprella, could face animal abuse charges.
