TUCSON – It was a crime of opportunity in the middle of the day. A Tucson grandmother had her purse snatched from her shoulder in front of a Walgreen’s at Ina and Oracle.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department called it a strong-arm robbery.
They said the thief waited for just the right moment to steal from the victim. Surveillance cameras showed the suspect and another person possibly a woman had moved their car several times in the parking lot.
They had been in the parking lot about an hour .
The victim said the thief caught her off guard when he grabbed her purse and swung her around. Luckily she didn’t fall or hurt herself.
Deputy Carolynn Stewart said the victim did the right thing by giving up her purse she added always protect yourself first your belongings can always be replaced.
The video surveillance showed a man wearing a gray shirt, possible khaki shorts taking the purse and then running away and getting into a waiting car.
The thief took her wallet that had her identification and credit cards. He also took a pair of toddler tennis shoes that she was giving to her grandson. She had her cash in her pocket and she was holding her cell phone.
Deputy James Allerton who works in the public information office said this case was alarming due to the brazen actions by the thief.
He added try not to be alone in the area, and don’t put yourself in a vulnerable position. If you see something suspicious call 9-1-1.
He said these types of criminals will target people that look like they are vulnerable.
Detectives need your help to identify the suspect, if he looks familiar call 88-CRIME or 9-1-1.
