TUCSON (KVOA) - After one Tucson family says their ballots were stolen right out of their mailbox, they are now urging voters to make sure the same thing does not happen to them.
"I'm very disappointed because we never had that issue before," Sandra Villegas said.
Villegas and her family had filled out their ballots and had them in the mail Tuesday. She says all four ballots were stolen right out of her mailbox.
Video from the families outside the surveillance system shows someone riding their bike away from their mailbox.
Villegas believes the theft was done by a kid.
"I don't know his intentions, if he was stealing the mail or stealing the ballots," Villegas said. "But I just want to tell families to take care of their children and see what they're doing."
Luckily, she said all four ballots were returned by a police officer who found them in the street.
"Thank God the envelopes were okay," Villegas said. "They were just with a lot of mark s... from cars because they were in the street and they were all damaged but they were okay."
She says her family has since dropped off their ballots in person. Now she has a message for the person that took them.
"This is very serious, this is not a game, this is not a good thing to do," Villegas said. "I wish somebody would come and talk to him. Never do this again because it affects more than a family and it's something that shouldn't happen to anyone of us."
Stealing a ballot is a federal crime which could lead to serious jail time.
