TUCSON - Visitors to the JCK Gem Show were treated to a live gem cutting demonstration on Thursday.
Gem cutter, Roger Dery, showed onlookers what it looks like to cut gemstones.
It was a behind the scenes look into the technical work that goes into making a gem shine.
“When we're cutting gemstones, especially with techniques used in the United States, lights will reflect off one side to the other than back to your eye so we have a planned effect on what happens to the light from the time it enters the gem until it leaves the gem,” said Dery.
Dery has been in the gem trade for nearly 20 years.
The final stones will be auctioned off to benefit the organization, Jewelers for Children.
