Tucson City Council approves rezoning project on Broadway Blvd.

TUCSON – Tucson City Council voted unanimously to rezone a four-acre block on Broadway Blvd. on Wednesday night.

This rezoning stretches from Tyndall Avenue to Park Avenue and is the gateway to both downtown and the Sunshine Mile.

Steve Kozachik, with Tucson City Council, says the new zoning will allow for residential homes on the south side of the block and small scale commercial buildings. The project’s focus is on residential, commercial, and historic preservation.

“Let’s not go in with a bulldozer and demolish everything that exists,” said Kozachik. “Let’s use what we have and bring in new smaller businesses, the kind of kitschy things that frankly make us something unique in Tucson and not another Mill Ave. in Phoenix.”

Project construction is expected to be underway in the first quarter of next year.
