Family members speak out after Tucson couple convicted on child porn charges

TUCSON – Days before Tucson’s Luis and Vanessa Ramirez were supposed to appear in court in May 2018, they kidnapped their two children, 5-year-old Luis Jr. and 6-month-old Kahmila, and fled south of the border.

Saturday marks one year since they left Arizona.

David Ramirez and his wife Erika were in the courtroom Friday to hear the verdict rendered on his brother and sister-in-law.

Luis and Vanessa were convicted of more than 20 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor and child porn. Luis was also convicted of molestation of a child and indecent exposure.

“Now that you see everything brought in front of you it’s almost like you are the jury as well and you’re deciding based on what you see,” David Ramirez said. “It’s really difficult for the family, both sides of the family, for the victim, having to go through that pain and suffering. Our hope is that maybe it puts more pressure on finding them, hopefully puts them on a priority list. Again, our concern is the well being of the kids.”

David and Erika had custody of their niece and nephew when their parents kidnapped them.

“All I can do is pray, pray they’re found quickly and that they’re safe,” Erika said.
