Nonagenerian continues tradition, walks up “A” Mountain for Good Friday Procession

TUCSON — At the annual Good Friday Procession up “A” Mountain there is a participant who takes her familiar place just behind the cross each year.

Margarita Rios is 92. She’s been making this pilgrimage with her daughters by her side since 2004.

“I have a lot of faith,” Rios said. “That’s why I come here every year to walk.  Because it makes me feel good, it makes me feel stronger.”

“She’s stubborn, she’s stubborn,” Margarita’s daughter Malena Ureña said. “And that keeps her going. So, she won’t give up, she won’t give up unless she’s bedridden.”

The Good Friday Procession is more than half a century old.

The cross will stand atop “A” Mountain through Sunrise Service on Easter Morning.

The Good Friday Procession was founded by community activist, David Herrera. He died in 2017 at 96.

Los Dorados now continues this tradition in his honor.
