TUCSON – The mystery intensifies as the flames did at an east side home Tuesday morning.
Fire crews were dispatched to a residence in the 3500 block of S. Calexico Avenue, just before 4 a.m. after receiving multiple 911 calls.
Firefighters and detectives are now investigating what happened. At this time, the homeowner is nowhere to be found.
Christian Novellino lives two doors down.
“We ran over there and started banging on the door and by that time the house was engulfed in a big old fireball,” Novellino said.
Investigators say it is difficult to search the home because the foundation is unstable.
“I only met him in passing while we were walking our dogs,” Novellino said. “We’d wave to each other and say hello and that was about as far as I got to meeting the gentleman.”
A dog escaped the fire and was taken to the Pima Animal Care Center.
“This is truly strange,” Novellino said. “This isn’t something that happens on this block. On a scale of 1 to 10, this is an 8 of weirdness.”
