Scottsdale Saguaro won its sixth straight state championship, 42-16 over Salpointe Catholic at Arizona Stadium Friday night.
Salpointe kept pace in a close first half, with two touchdowns answering Saguaro scores. Trailing 7-0 in the first quarter, star running back Bijan Robinson ran 36 yards to the end zone to tie the game. Saguaro’s Marqui Johnson returned the ensuing kickoff to give the Sabercats a 14-7 lead.
In the second quarter, on 4th and 7, Salpointe’s Devin Green hit Dae Han Chang for a long touchdown pass to cut the lead to 14-13, after the Lancers missed the extra point.
Saguaro scored again before half, leading 21-13 at the break. The Sabercats outscored Salpointe 21-3 in the second half.
Salpointe finishes its season 13-1. The Lancers are 35-6 in the past three seasons, with two State Title appearances and a state semifinal appearance. All three playoff losses are to Saguaro.
