Woman charged with murder in death of cyclist

TUCSON – A 73-year-old cyclist is dead after a woman struck him at the top of “A” Mountain.

The Tucson Police Department said the suspect is 20-year-old Yanibra Moreno, who was impaired at the time of the crash.

It happened at 9:30 Thursday morning.  “A” Mountain Park was closed for the day as traffic investigators went over the crash sites.

Sgt. Peter Dugan, said the woman was driving on the wrong side of the road when she collided with the cyclist at the top of the mountain.

She left the scene, and on her way down she also struck two people.  Her vehicle ended up crashing into some boulders at the foot of the mountain.

Witnesses said she admitted she was drunk, and that her 20-year-old passenger told her to drive even though she knew she should not.

One witness told News 4 Tucson the woman incoherent and kept saying she had children at home and needed to leave.

The witnesses said they chased her down as she attempted to leave the area and held her until police arrived.

Sgt. Dugan said the suspect was being treated at Banner University Medical Center for minor injuries].

When she’s released from the hospital, she will be taken to the Pima County Jail and charged with second-degree murder, felony hit-and-run as well as two counts of aggravated assault.
