Roadrunners Hockey helps Tucson economy

TUCSON – The third season of Tucson Roadrunners Hockey kicks Saturday.

It is a pretty popular event for locals and with visitors as well.

Thousands of people go to every game. That is thousands of people heading downtown, which helps business around the area.

Visit Tucson says each year Roadrunners Hockey gets more popular and gains more excitement.

Many games last season were close to selling out and they have several season ticket holders.

Visit Tucson Spokesperson, Dan Gibson, says they see more people out and about downtown during game days.

They also get a lot of people from out of town who enjoy coming to Tucson for games.

Local businesses say they are thankful for the Roadrunners being here because of the business it brings in.

“It’s something different for sure and if you haven’t been to one of the games, the excitement level is a real thing,” said Gibson. “The action of hockey is something is happening every minute, there’s music and fun and games, but also it’s a great opportunity to get downtown. There’s plenty to do down here. There’s 80 restaurants in the area. There’s all this stuff going on so you can make an evening of it.”

Opening night is Saturday Oct. 6. The Roadrunners play the San Diego Gulls and it starts at 7 p.m. at the Tucson Convention Center (TCC).
