N4T Lifesaver: Year-round ABCs of drowning prevention

TUCSON – With temperatures creeping into the upper 90’s, it’s definitely getting close to pool season, but learning the ABC’s of water safety are critical 365 days a year.

“Our hope obviously is that we don’t see one water incident for the rest of the year. That would be awesome,” said Tracy Koslowski, with Drexel Heights Fire District.

As temperatures begin to heat up, kids will be looking to cool down, but the ABC’s of water safety aren’t just important during the spring and summer months.

“We want to make sure that we’re paying attention to it year-round, and certainly right now before school lets out, be paying attention and make sure that we’re making smart, safe decisions,” Koslowski said.

All the more reason to get signed-up for our news four Tucson Lifesaver Swimfests.

It’s a chance for even the youngest of children to learn the skills they’ll need to stay safe.

“That’s when they’re really learning, and really absorbing everything around them. So if we can teach those water safety components early on, they’re going to be better later on,” said Candis Martin, YMCA of Southern Arizona aquatics director.

Now is the time to expose them to water, so they can get them comfortable with it.

“It’s super important that we maintain these skills year after year, so that these kids become really confident in the water,” Martin added.
