PICACHO PEAK– You pass it on the way to Phoenix but hikers looking for a quick challenge stop to go Hittin’ the Trails.
Under the daunting shadows of Picacho Peak lies the Hunter Trail!
We spoke with Randee Gleeson who is the communications coordinator with Arizona State Parks and Trails. She said, “It’s definitely a tougher trail so you want to take plenty of water and snacks but it’s a pretty short trail, only about a mile and a half. So it’s definitely doable you just have to take your time.”
It’s a lung buster with a 17-hundred foot elevation change and that climb is aided by cables that flank the path. Gleeson says to also bring gloves with you as they can be taxing on your hands.
The view from the top is worth the work with valleys and mountains stretching for miles in all directions.
There is a fee to hike at Picacho Peak State Park. Directions and trail map can be found right here. Happy hiking!
