Hittin’ the Trails 4 You – winter weather hiking safety

TUCSON - For this week's Hittin' the Trails we're talking winter weather hiking safety!

I would skip the trails today and tomorrow as we're expecting snow for elevations above 4,000. If you plan on a hike this weekend after the snow stops here's a few reminders.

  • Always dress in layers and bring extra layers with you. As of now, snow cover starts around 5,000 feet but will drop to as low as 3,000 feet later today.
  • High elevation trails are snow covered and might be slick due to ice accumulation so walk carefully.
  • For the lower elevations, loose rocks and running washes are the main concern.
  • Also, let a friend or family member know where you are hiking and when you're expecting to return just in case there is an accident.
