TUCSON (KVOA)- Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, health officials have been putting their lives on the line to keep everyone safe.

Some of the people who are the first line of defense of the pandemic are environmental services workers (EVS).

"Some people say, 'Oh they are just housekeepers,'" said Irma Amaya, an EVS education trainer at Banner UMC. "We are not, we are much as a part as a doctor is, as a nurse, you know we might not care one-on-one with the patient, but our job is to keep them safe by cleaning."

Amaya is one of the many people who are going to a hospital, cleaning high-touch areas, and doing laundry and janitorial work to make sure everything is sanitized to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

"We are the germ killers of the hospital," said Amaya.
