Getting Answers: Can the coronavirus be spread through eyes?

TUCSON (KVOA)- The coronavirus is primarily spread by respiratory droplets when an infected person talks, coughs or sneezes.

Some viewers wanted to know if the coronavirus could be contracted through eyes.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology reported that the coronavirus can spread through the eyes, just like it can through the mouth or nose.

While it is more likely for a person to breath in those respiratory droplets from the mouth or nose, tiny particles can enter the body thorough the eyes especially after touching a contaminated surface and then rubbing the eyes.

The AAO offered tips on how to protect your eyes to slow the spread of the coronavirus, which includes wearing glasses instead of contact lenses, stock up on eye medication prescriptions and avoid rubbing the eyes.

The AAO recommends if you have to itch or rub your eyes, use a tissue instead of your fingers. Also, if you are caring for someone who is sick, the AAO advises to wear goggles when you are around that person.
