Getting Answers: Reporting COVID-19 recoveries in Arizona

Remaining Ad Time Ad - 00:00

TUCSON (KVOA)- Some viewers have asked why there is no data being reported on how many people have recovered from the coronavirus in Arizona.

The Arizona Department of Health Services releases updated data every morning on its data dashboard, but does not include "recoveries."

"There is no national surveillance definition for "recovery" for COVID-19," said Holly Poynter with ADHS. "ADHS is evaluating existing definitions to determine what reporting makes sense for Arizona data. Due to the rapidly evolving nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, data points are continuously evaluated to ensure that the most accurate information is available to the public."

The state health department does report the discharges from the hospital, but it notes that large increases or decreases in the numbers may be due to differences in self reporting.

There are also many people who never go to the hospital and just recover at home.

There are some county health departments in Arizona that do report recoveries like Santa Cruz and Cochise County. However, the Pima County Health Department does not report recoveries.
