Cochise County detention officer accused of sex with inmate

SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. (AP) — Police in Sierra Vista have arrested a Cochise County Sheriff’s Office detention officer on suspicion of unlawful sexual conduct with an inmate.

They say Officer Jose Brian Moreno was taken into custody Monday and later resigned from his job.

Police in the towns of Bisbee and Sierra Vista say they learned Sunday of an allegation of sexual conduct between Moreno and a female inmate.

Sheriff’s officials say an investigation determined the conduct was consensual.

But they say Arizona law prohibits a detention officer from intentionally or knowingly engaging in any act of a sexual nature with an offender who’s in the custody of a county jail.

Moreno is facing two counts of unlawful sexual contact.

It was unclear Tuesday if he has a lawyer yet for his case.
