Parents who refused to bring son to hospital win custody

PHOENIX (AP) — An Arizona couple whose three children were taken into state custody after they refused a doctor’s advice to bring their sick 2-year-old boy to hospital have won custody that lets them care for and supervise their children.

Brooks Bryce says his children returned home weeks ago under the condition that Bryce’s parents serve as “safety monitors.”

The custody granted Tuesday means Bryce’s parents no longer have to serve as monitors.

Still, the state retains decision-making authority over the children.

Officers forced their way into the family’s Chandler home in February to bring the boy to the hospital after the parents refused to open the door.

Earlier, the boy had a fever of 105 degrees (41 Celsius).

The parents said the boy was improving after his fever broke.
