Tucson woman accused in child abuse case reaches plea deal

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — A Tucson woman accused with her husband of keeping her three daughters imprisoned in their home for three months has pleaded guilty to kidnapping and child abuse charges.

KGUN-TV reports Sophia Richter reached a plea agreement Monday to charges against her in Pima and Pinal counties.

She’s scheduled to be sentenced June 10.

Richter was convicted in 2016 and given a 20-year prison sentence in 2017.

The Arizona Supreme Court reversed her convictions in last August and ordered a new trial.

The state Court of Appeals ruled a trial judge erred in not letting Richter introduce a defense that she was compelled to commit the crimes by her husband’s threats and use of force.

Fernando Richter was sentenced to 58 years in prison for child abuse, kidnapping and aggravated assault.
