NBC News- Eating more plant protein and less meat could help you live longer, according to a new study from Harvard University.
Researchers tracked more than 37,000 Americans who ate a similar number of calories.
They found people who ate the most nuts were 27-percent less likely to die of any cause than those who ate the least.
Replacing just five-percent of daily calories from animal proteins with plant proteins cut the risk of early death by almost 50-percent.
Benefits of olive oil
Another plant that is good for you is olives or olive oil to be precise.
Researchers from Harvard followed roughly 100,000 Americans for nearly 25-years.
They found that eating more than half a tablespoon of olive oil per day, lowered the risk of any kind of heart disease by 15-percent and coronary artery disease by 21-percent.
Also, replacing just a single teaspoon of butter, margarine, mayonnaise or dairy fat with the same amount of olive oil also decreased the risk.
However, the increased intake did not appear to impact the risk for stroke.
